Sample Budget / Profit & Loss Spreadsheet for Purebred Cattle Breeders

Recently a new young Brahman breeder contacted us because they were working on applying for a loan to start their cattle operation, and they had to provide a business plan. They didn’t know where to start, and when we got to thinking about it, there really isn’t a lot of information out there about what it takes to run a purebred registered cattle operation.

One of the members of the BRC management team is really into spreadsheets. You might guess which one it is lol. But, we have developed a pretty detailed spreadsheet of the categories of expenses we have in our operation. We are happy to share it. We hope this gives you a starting point. If you use Quickbooks, you can get a lot of this data from Quickbooks.

What we do, is about once a week, we run a P&L statement from Quickbooks, and then update this spreadsheet. It helps us know if we are on track for our income and expense goals.

The spreadsheet is formatted where you can enter in your estimates for # of head, average sales price. Some formulas are built in – like advertising and tithing – and others you just type in the data for your operations. Once you submit the form you’ll get a more detailed email explanation about how to use the spreadsheet.

But we hope this helps, and anyone is welcome to use this as a starting point for their operation.
