As we close out 2024, it’s time to reflect on this year’s Brahman cattle market and analyze trends based on public auction data from across the country. Each week we track this data from publicly reported Brahman auctions and online sales. Our specific interest is tracking Brahman heifer sale prices and Brahman bull sale prices so that we can ensure our pricing at the ranch is in line with the industry and the quality we offer.

With data from 449 head of grey Brahman females, 36 grey Brahman bulls, and 71 red Brahman females, this report provides insights into market averages and performance across the Brahman breed.

Grey Brahman Heifer Sale Prices

The average price for a grey Brahman female in 2024 was $5,403, reflecting a 22% decrease from 2023 when the average was $6,894. While this drop may seem significant, it aligns closely with the 2022 average of $5,472. Notably, the increase in volume—approximately 150 more head tracked in 2024—likely contributed to this market adjustment.

Grey Brahman Bull Prices

Grey Brahman bulls averaged $6,233, demonstrating steady demand and consistent pricing for sires across the breed.

Red Brahman Female Prices

The red Brahman market saw substantial growth, with red females averaging $9,061—a 41% increase from the 2023 average of $6,400. This jump indicates heightened demand and a premium market position for red Brahman genetics.

Bloodline Analysis

A deeper dive into the data reveals trends across demand for major Brahman bloodlines. While we won’t name the specific programs rankings, the following insights showcase how bloodlines influenced pricing. We tracked the data from any ranch who had at least 20 progeny sired by their bulls sold in 2024. Please note that this data reflects any cattle sired by a ranch’s AI sire, not just limited to their own, but more importantly, what their customers are able to sell their progeny for.

The following ranches had the most progeny sold sired by their bulls:

  • JD Hudgins (90 head tracked from this bloodline)
  • BRC (66 head tracked from this bloodline)
  • V8 Ranch (56 head tracked from this bloodline)
  • Heritage cattle (46 head tracked from this bloodline)
  • La Muneca (32 head sold from this bloodline)
  • Moreno Ranches (22 head)
  • University of Florida (21 head)

BRC Bloodlines: Cattle sired by BRC bulls stood out, averaging $10,479—a 48% premium above the overall market average. This figure is based on 66 head tracked and underscores the exceptional demand for genetics sired by BRC bulls.

Second-Highest Premium: Heritage Cattle’s program’s bloodlines averaged 32% above the market average, showing strong performance for this bloodline. Last year, Heritage was the top. We have noticed many breeders using BRC bulls on Heritage females and Heritage bulls on BRC females.

Other Programs: Other bloodlines ranged from 2% to 55% lower than the average.

These findings highlight the strong preference among buyers for cattle with proven pedigrees, particularly those tied to top-tier programs like BRC.

Takeaways for 2024

  1. Increased Supply Impacts Grey Female Averages: The rise in the number of grey Brahman females offered for sale may have tempered average prices.
  2. Red Brahman Females See Surging Demand: The substantial increase in average price for red females indicates a growing niche market.
  3. Bloodline Matters: Cattle with BRC bloodlines continue to lead the market, with averages significantly outpacing competitors and reinforcing their reputation for high-quality genetics.

The Brahman cattle market remains dynamic, with shifts influenced by supply, demand, and the ongoing pursuit of superior genetics. BRC Ranch’s strong performance reflects not only the quality of its program but also the enduring confidence buyers place in cattle backed by proven pedigrees.
